epice curcuma bienfaits superaliment

In summary: Turmeric, a spice with powerful antioxidants, has anti-inflammatory properties, aids digestion and supports joint health. Rich in curcumin, it stimulates the immune system, helps with liver detoxification and improves cognitive function. Ideal in cooking or drinks, it can easily be incorporated into recipes to enjoy its superfood benefits every day.

What is turmeric?

If we had to give an instinctive definition of turmeric, it would be the powdered spice we all know, particularly found in curry.

But turmeric is also the name of the plant from which it is extracted. We use the rhizome of this plant, its underground part, fresh or ground into powder. Very popular in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, it is an ancient plant with many benefits, both culinary and therapeutic.

Turmeric is rich in polyphenols: curcuminoids, which are responsible for its distinctive yellow colour. Among these curcuminoids, curcumin stands out in particular.

It is of interest to us for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

It is also very interesting in many dishes from a culinary perspective, which it will colour beautifully. Turmeric can be used fresh, for example in juice, as a powder or as a food supplement. It is mainly found in South Asia, but also in Africa, the Caribbean and Japan..

What are the benefits of turmeric?

Curcuminoids, including curcumin, have very interesting antioxidant properties, making turmeric one of the most powerful natural anti-inflammatories identified to date.

Turmeric has interesting effects on digestion because it stimulates bile secretions. It also acts on digestive disorders such as bloating, nausea and loss of appetite...

It is also useful in cosmetics for skin problems (psoriasis, eczema...).

It is credited with benefits in certain cancers because it is thought to induce apoptosis (self-destruction) in cancer cells and inhibit angiogenesis (growth). Many studies are under way on the subject, and some have shown in the laboratory that it increases the effectiveness of chemotherapy and may reduce tumour progression.

In any case, you should always seek advice from your medical team to avoid interfering with ongoing treatments.

How do you choose it well?

You will find turmeric almost everywhere. Its colour is not a quality criterion, as it depends on the variety. I choose mine from controlled organic farming in India’s Kerala region.

The origin of rhizomes sold loose is more difficult to control. The bulb should be nice and plump if you want to extract its juice.

Turmeric powder should be stored in a cool, dry place away from light. The rhizome can be kept in the fridge for several weeks

Can turmeric be used in an infusion?

Yes, but not only that, because to be absorbed by the body, turmeric must be combined with black pepper or ginger.

It can be used daily in food, as an infusion, as a poultice or as a more highly dosed food supplement.

Is turmeric a miracle food?

Studies are currently being conducted in laboratories. There is still a long way to go.

My conclusion is that if we use it daily in our diet, it can only bring us benefits.

Recipe ideas with turmeric

I really enjoy using fresh turmeric rhizomes to make juices. I find them very flavoursome.

To do this, I put a piece through the juicer, along with two carrots, an orange, half a lemon and a piece of ginger

I also use it in my Curcunola recipes. A turmeric-based granola combined with ginger and coconut oil for better absorption.

A few spoonfuls of Curcunola in a smoothie with coconut milk and banana, and my breakfast is ready.
