Carrots make you amiable
Drum roll, please… It’s… FALSE! This saying is actually a nod to the benefits of carrots, and in particular to beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant that is said to help slow down skin ageing. But as for making you pleasant and good-tempered, there is no proof, even if some researchers conducted a study on the link between antioxidants and optimism. The result: among the 982 people tested, researchers noted higher antioxidant levels in individuals who described themselves as optimistic. However, this is not enough proof to definitively claim that carrots actually make you more optimistic, and therefore more pleasant.
Carrots give you a healthy glow
It’s… true and false! In fact, the beta-carotene in carrots could, in large amounts, lend a subtly sun-kissed complexion. On the other hand, consuming normal amounts of carrots will have no noticeable effect on your skin tone.
However, the carotenoids found in carrots are thought to prepare our skin for tanning by boosting our resistance to ultraviolet rays, as well as stimulating melanin synthesis. In other words, they help protect skin from the sun while encouraging a tan – what’s not to love?
Carrots improve eyesight
Against all odds, it would seem to be true. It is all down to beta-carotene, which our bodies convert into vitamin A. And it is this vitamin that is said to help us see better in the dark.
Carrots are good for your figure
It’s true! Packed with vitamins, carrots are undeniably your slimming ally. Cooked or raw, they contain just 33 kilocalories per 100g. That makes them very light indeed… and delicious to boot.
