Why are pesticides found in tea?
Tea leaves are grown in countries with hot and humid climates. For this reason, China, India and Sri Lanka are among the largest tea producers in the world. The leaves are harvested without being washed with water before or after the different processing stages that they undergo. Not washing the tea leaves with water allows them to concentrate their flavor and preserve all of their aromas.
But to protect their production, farmers often resort to pesticides or fertilizers. High temperatures and humidity contribute to the proliferation of fungi or parasites which ravage the leaves of tea plants. Since the leaves are not rinsed with water after vaporization, the chemical substances remain, then infuse into the water in our cups of tea.
European regulations concerning organic teas
Since January 1, 2021, the European Organic Regulation (EC) No. 2018/848 defines and imposes organic rules for imported consumer products. Europe has established these specifications so that tea from non-EU countries that respect them can be certified organic. Organic agriculture must be based on quality production, minimizing contamination of crops and soil.
The organic regulations therefore authorize the use of certain products – fertilizers, insecticides and pesticides – on the condition that they come from natural products. As for synthetic products, they must not be present beyond certain thresholds. In order to ensure safety during production, but also consumption, a product must be 95% organic to be certified.
How to choose the right organic tea leaves?
Certifying bodies control and analyze organic farming production several times a year in order to authorize their labeling. For teas to be labeled “organic products”, the organization must approve compliance with the specifications. Checks are therefore carried out in crops, manufacturing plants, before import and upon arrival of products on European territory.
This is the case of Ecocert, which ensures that a product has been grown, prepared and packaged according to the rules of organic farming. Organic teas are therefore guaranteed to comply with European requirements, with traces of chemicals being below the required thresholds. To ensure you enjoy the benefits and flavor of loose teas, a quality herbal tea or infusion that preserves your health, opt for a certified organic variety. In addition, their price is not necessarily more expensive! You obtain, on the other hand, the certainty of consuming a product with real aromas throughout the day, without potentially dangerous effects.
