It wouldn’t come as a surprise if we told you that our founder Pavel Kousmichoff wasn’t the type to wear a striped top and a beret, would it? So, how can a tea that was born in Russia be Made in France, you may ask?
In 2003, when the Orebi brothers bought Kusmi, our Russian teas became French, and we chose to drop anchor in Le Havre. Yes, our organic teas and infusions are considered, created, blended, flavoured and packaged in our workshops in Saint-Vigor d’Ymonville, near Le Havre, in Normandy.
That’s why, at Kusmi, we’re not afraid to change things when they no longer suit us. This is what happened in 2012 when we found a French SME that could replace our foreign metal box manufacturer.
As a result, we have repatriated the entire production of our tea bags and infusions from Morocco to Le Havre. Technology meant production costs were lower in France, so we dropped the prices of our 20-bag boxes by 15%, and the price has remained the same ever since. We think just doing it ourselves is the best way to make sure it’s done right.
For us, producing far away what we are going to sell close to home does not make sense. Fewer kilometres travelled means less pollution and the bonus of work in our regions.
3 million tea bags are made each month in our workshops, creating smiles at the breakfast table and, above all, jobs in France all year round: 600 to be exact, at our headquarters in Paris, in our workshop in Normandy and in our 120 shops in France and elsewhere.
We are certainly proud of this improved carbon footprint and the jobs created.
This production process, firmly anchored in the Le Havre area, makes Kusmi Tea a full member of The French Fab, a movement promoting “Made in France” industries.
The French Fab network is the Banque Publique d’Investissement initiative to promote Made in France expertise and industry.
The aim is to bring together companies representing “industry the French way”, “the French industry ecosystem”, in short, the industrial flagship of France!
In 2020, Kusmi presented “Petit déjeuner à l’Élysée”, an organic tricolour recipe born of its collaboration with the Presidency of the Republic, which entrusted it with the creation of its organic tea. This partnership is based on shared values: on the one hand, traditional skills and expertise; on the other hand, the French art of living and conviviality.
And all this with respect for the environment, which is essential for the planet.
A product of responsible agriculture and labelled organic, this tea is made using traditional production methods, a true reflection of the company’s French savoir-faire.
With “Petit déjeuner à l’Élysée”, Kusmi is also proud to play a part in the restoration of our country’s heritage.
The sale of each product offered by the Elysée shop contributes to financing renovation work on the Elysée Palace, 300 years after its construction, and contributes to preserving our cultural and historical heritage.
