Yerba mate is a traditional drink from Latin America, very popular in Argentina, and is made by infusing the leaves of the Ilex paraguariensis tree. These are dried and crushed to obtain yerba mate. With its high caffeine content, mate is an effective stimulant that can disturb sleep.
Are mate and sleep compatible?
The consumption of mate can have an impact on your sleep because of its caffeine content. Indeed, each person has a different tolerance and receptivity to this molecule. It is generally said that drinking too much mate will prevent you from sleeping. Why is this?
What are the active stimulants in mate?
• Caffeine: the main active ingredient in coffee, mate contains slightly less.
• Theine: a natural component of tea (also called tea caffeine), it could help concentration.
• Theobromine: a mood-relaxing molecule, also present in cocoa.
Like coffee, yerba mate is an energy booster! Yerba mate can be consumed during the day, but may disturb sleep.
Good to know:
Did you know that theine and caffeine are actually derived from the same molecule? Except that they do not have the same effects on the body. Caffeine is bioavailable and is absorbed almost immediately, whereas theine is released throughout the day.
Can you drink mate before bedtime or in the evening?
Of course you can drink mate before going to bed or in the evening. It contains less caffeine than tea or espresso and therefore has less of a stimulating effect.
But whether you have trouble sleeping depends on your sensitivity to caffeine! Some people find it difficult to fall asleep, while others can enjoy a mate in the evening.
Enjoy the benefits of this delicious and versatile drink. Mate contains:
• Antioxidants with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
• Amino acids, which promote digestion and relieve anxiety.
• Vitamins A, C, E and B2 for energy!
The combination of these active ingredients with theobromine can trigger a feeling of relaxation in the mate drinker. Note that this can limit the energizing effect of caffeine.
